I don 't totally blame W, but I don't think he can get away blameless. When Katrina hit, he was at his ranch ON VACATION. I mean, this shouldn't be surprising at all seeing as that is where the majority of his time in office has been spent. But I just think its sickening that our president could just be so heartless. The comments that Barbara Bush made, basically that the people in the Astrodome are now better off. These people don't understand the poor. They don't understand the concept one bit. They never had to fight for anything or worry about money. They least they could have done was fake caring a little better.
As for the poor people moving elsewhere. Come on, Josh. They have no money. When I mean "no money," I don't mean I work at Wal-Mart and make "no money." I'm talking like that's where you live. Yeah, it's below sea level, but so is half the Netherlands. So are parts of Texas. It doesn't make it right, or better, but I really think people live where they live and that's it. They tried to leave and thought the government could help. Government didn't help. They didn't even go through the actual disaster plan they had previously discussed for JUST THIS EVENT.
Imagine being one of those thousands of people trapped on that highway. Those people that sat there, only reporters there to capture their story. Where was the government then? How could CNN be there, but the National Guard nowhere to be found? Oh yeah.. they are all in Iraq.
I just makes me sick that this could happen. That the lawlessness that came from the Astrodome, people being raped and robbed, all the people that looted for non-necessity items. Its just outrageous.
The Mayor, yeah, he did a crappy job. But you know what, he was asking for help. He asked for help from the beginning. I mean, he's a mayor. How do you even conceptualize the fact that within a few hours your town, your city, your homes WILL BE underwater? What could he do? He wanted a higher power to help and no one came. Yeah, most people probably thought, its his job, he needs to do something. I just can't believe that if someone saw what he was doing and if they could have helped, why didn't they? Why didn't our government step in?
I don't know. There isn't really anything I can say except that it was the worst disaster that has ever hit the United States. The reason no one helped was because why should that wealthy one percent elite of our country, our president included, ever care about the majority of our working class, poor country? They don't need us and it doesn't affect them.
