Home is where I like to spend a few days and then leave (part 2)

All in all, I had a really good time in L-County. My family was in great spirits. No major fights or cat killings while I was there. I got to see Cole play a Little League game.

They didn’t win, but they held on to the last. It reminded me of the last soft ball game I was in with the English dept. boys, although the secret weapon on the Little League team was a girl who could play circles around most of the boys there.

I also got to spend some time with the always wonderful Allison.

She is very energetic and happy now. She’s made it past that stage where babies can only lay there and drool. My sister swears that she is talking at 5 months and that she loves Buffy the Vampire Slayer. When I joked about this with my mom, she quickly moved to back my sister up,

“It’s true. The other day there was a vampire on the TV and Allison just stared at it and smiled.”

I didn’t know whether to be disturbed or hope that my niece was a chosen one.

My Aunt Toot came by a lot. Now that her husband has passed away she is always walking around the neighborhood and dropping in on my parents. This is a very interesting development since my dad’s bothers and sisters (he has seven-of which he is the youngest) used to see him as the black sheep of the family and avoid him. Now, they are starting to come around all the time.

I’m really happy about it, but it does take some getting used to. Toot always has something strange or disturbing to say (which shows me where my dad gets it). The other day we were on the deck when my dad started teasing her about getting remarried. She looked over at me and said,

“Buck, go get your shotgun, I’m gonna shoot your dad’s balls off.”

Anna came down from Bloomington on Friday and we played Catan with Brent. Then, on Saturday we went to the Rendezvous-A Revolutionary War re-enactment in Vincennes, IN.

They have tons of really good food and a few that are interesting, but not as good. A few years back I got a fried mushroom with sausage that was as big as my fist, but when I bit into it a gallon of grease poured into my mouth and down my chin. I turned the apple sized mushroom over and shook it for about five minutes as more grease poured from the hole.

This time out we bought grilled corn on the cob that was amazing. The interesting thing was that they had a huge pot of melted butter and as you walked by you dipped the whole cob in to get it good and soaked.

We also bought a huge turkey leg that you could use as a club just in case the red coats got past the militia.

It was good, but I (King of the small esophagus) got some stuck in my throat and spent the next half hour trying to get it out. At one point, I had wandered off to the edge of the festivities when a cop came up and asked me if I was all right. I was worried that he thought I was drunk, but he was really nice about the whole thing. I apologized for being gross and he was all professional, “I’m not bothered by gross, son. I just want to make sure you are ok.”

Note to self (and Mike Williams) - Always chew your food really, really well.

Saturday night we met up with Jackie & Joey and Mike W. & Laura to play Bohnanza and Zombies!! at Dann’s. Dann wasn’t there for a while, but he was kind enough to let us hangout and when he got there the game switched to Apples to Apples so we could accommodate for seven.
