I was taking photos in the garden, and got really excited when I found the most gorgeous lichen growing on my bedroom windowsill!

I’d been taking photos of bugs too, since I very often do, as there are always lots of them to take photos of.

I took some photos of mud wasp nests under the windowsill, and Neil came and commented on them, so I said I had to show him something else too. I noticed it a couple of days ago and then forgot to do anything about it - a paper wasp nest in the carport. And it’s active, you can even see the little grubs in the cells in the photos I took earlier today. That will have to be burned. I think you have to do it at dusk though, when they’re inactive, so they don’t attack.

So when we came inside I showed him the photos I’d taken, and he said I should enter the ABC bug photos competition. So I looked it up.

And I won’t be entering.

It’s not that I don’t have lots of photos of bugs. I do.

But. I actually read the Terms and Conditions.

First of all, since I’ve already put my photos on flickr, I can’t enter them -

Secondly, and this really is a bit much -

# By submitting your Work to the Promoter, you grant the Promoter and its licensees and assignees a non-exclusive licence to exercise all rights in perpetuity throughout the world in your Work and all other material provided by you to the Promoter pursuant to this Competition at any time.

# Without limiting the rights granted to the Promoter under clause 12, you acknowledge the Promoter may exercise any of the following non-exclusive rights throughout the world:

1. the right to communicate your Work in whole or in part to the public on any media platform;

# Your Work may be edited or adapted at any time by the Promoter in order to:

1. meet the requirements of broadcasting authorities;

2. adhere to any requirements of the ABC Editorial Policies (available at www.abc.net.au/corp);

3. ensure your Work meets any legal or classification requirements or to avoid any breach of law;

4. use your Work for promotional purposes; and/or

5. use your Work on other ABC media platforms.

# You acknowledge that the Promoter may allow users to view, reproduce, download and otherwise deal in the copyrights attached to and embodied in your Work. The Promoter aims to ensure that any use of your Work not authorised by the Promoter will not occur, however you acknowledge that the Promoter is not equipped with mechanisms to prevent unauthorised use of your Work, and you accept that, to the extent allowable under the law, the Promoter has no liability to you for how the end user elects to use your Work, and as such it may be permanently stored, reproduced, copied, distributed or the like, without recourse or remedy against the Promoter.
