So on Friday, my manager asks me what I'm doing on Saturday night. I cleverly respond, "Leaving at 5 o'clock, I hope."
He asked me to come in around 1 a.m. Saturday night / Sunday morning. The company is upgrading some of its systems, and they need someone to test activation of a couple phone numbers, and an internet account.
My manager mentions the possibility of some other maintenance extending the process. He said if it runs too long, I can go back home, and have them call me back.
So I go home after work Saturday, down a couple of Benadryl, watch an episode of Stargate: SG-1, then try to sleep until 11 pm in my 75 degree apartment. After a fitful nap, I redress, stop for coffee and food at Jack in the Box, and get here at 12:45 a.m. - I figure I should be a little early, rather than show up late. I log into the conference call, and advise of my arrival. Looks like it might be 30-45 minutes before we might start testing.
I check in after an hour, and ask what it looks like. "Hang tight, it should be pretty soon," they say.
The rest of the night passes like this. Wait; ask for an update; be asked to wait. Repeat.
I sat waiting to start testing until 5:15 a.m. One of the tasks I'm testing completes. The rest of the tasks fail, because someone didn't set the test accounts up ahead of time like they were supposed to.
It's 6:15 now. I've been waiting again for the past 45 - 50 minutes. There are better ways to spend a Saturday night or Sunday morning... but at least this is all overtime, and I'm really not doing that much work. Just listening to other people talk on speakerphone.
Maybe I should catch up on some correspondence.
