Since the first time I heard these guy back in 86, I think, Skinny Puppy has been my favorite band.Sure they could put out a few stinkers here and there but they always progress and were way ahead of everyone else. A few of my top tracks
Bites- The Choke, when dance music was tiny and wimpy this track was aggression and harsh, yes there is a bit of the 80s in their track from the bell synth line but this track punches you. They did a remix on the last tour that was impressive. Icebreaker- a soundtrack to a bad nightmare, very odd and non linear track. Tons of pitch shifting and everything, no one sounded anything like this at the time.
Mind the Perpetual Intercourse- They dropped the obvious 80s synth programming and went with more of an analogue/atmospheric sound. One Time/ One Place, I like how Ogre uses different voices to add layers to a track that really isn't a straight forward arrangement, this mirrors the haunting pads and harsh samples. Gods Gift Maggot- another track that is completely different that anything that was out at this time. Similar to Icebreaker but pushed further. I like how they used someone talking, not sure if it a sample or Ogre, pitch shifted as a synth line.
Cleanse Fold and Manipulate- Addiction, one of my favorite tracks of all time, it seems the ideas they where icing on the last two releases peaked on this one, dark, creepy, melodic, driving and more all mixed into one track. As well as First Aid and Second Tooth. Anger is a very dissonance track and very unpop structured. Ogre voice is pitched and mulitapped to almost unlistenable. The tack itself is a bunch of sample of every and anything built over a drum beat. For a time when glam metal ruled and the accountant song writers were in charge of synth pop this was way over the top. A funny note I went to the cd release party for this and it was also a Clive Barker book signing. Talk about a growing experience, in the 9:30 club in DC this cd playing with Hell raiser on all the tv screens and meeting Clive Barker.
VIVIsectVI- They must have gotten a ton of new gear as the sounds go from warm analogue to more cold digital, the production is top notch, the best they have had to this point but a change of direction for them. This cd is a bit harder, a lot of the pads have dropped away and replaced by layers of percussion. I used to listen to this everyday and burnt out on it a bit. Harsh Stone White- a very haunting piece that still gives me chills.
