24 S9 E11

24 season 9, episode 11.

In the penultimate episode, Jack learns that an old enemy of his is in London - someone who harmed both he and Audrey, and but for Cheng, Jack might have lived a much different, happier life. It might be a lot to ask that this aspect gets some attention, but still, a lot of interesting things are happening.

China is understandably pissed about a US sub firing on one of its carriers. They are less understandably disposed to immediate retalliation against a world power with ten times the nuclear arsenal (according to dialogue) within an hour of that first stroke. Huh.

The upside: the Chinese might see reason if Cheng can be proven to be alive, and the device he used to hack the US sub is provided.

The downside: this is precisely what will happen. Jack will accomplish this in the first half of the next episode. But try to act surprised.

Mark's story comes to a head. He is finally found out for trying to turn Jack over to the Russians, and his penance is to go on a dangerous mission to the Russian embassy on which he may be killed. Great convenience: Cheng is working for the Russians. Jack gets to deal with two enemies at once! Well, Mark appears to survive that one. Will he now face punishment for treason as Heller suggested? Will his marriage to Audrey conveniently crumble, leaving her open to be swept up by Jack?

The episode ends with Audrey's entire secret service detail being ambushed and killed, and her at the mercy of Cheng's sniper. 24 is a show that constantly uses power relationships and leverage. Jack uses leverage, the bad guys uses leverage, leverage, leverage, LEVERAGE!

The preview for next week shows a flag-draped casket. My bet is on Heller, but undoubtedly they're trying to make us think it's Jack since next episode may very well be the last time we see him on screen. It could very well be a ruse, too: Jack seems to die, but a grateful Heller helps Jack fake his death and smuggle him back home to America? Or are they going for the girlfriend in the fridge scenario, and killing off Audrey? Maybe it's Chloe?

Here's the odds I'm giving for deaths next episode:
Jack - 10 to 1
Audrey - 7 to 1
Mark - 5 to 1
Heller - 3 to 1
Chloe - 2 to 1
Cheng - ...be stupid to bet against it

In my estimation they want to end off this 24 revival with some heavy emotional toll. Chloe has lost her family but has been redeemed for helping save Jack & the world. She is also the character with the most apperances after Jack. She is likeable despite her flaws. In many ways her death would prove more emotional than any others. All killing Audrey would do is be a kick in the teeth.

Let me just say as we approach what may be the last ever episode of 24 that I want some things to happen:
* Jack to finally get a happy ending
* Audrey to leave Mark. Leeeeave him. He's not a good person.
* Heller to resign from the Presidency in dignity ... and the Vice President to be someone we've met before
* The problem of Russia to at last be removed for Jack, so he can live in peace
* An appearance of Kim Bauer & her kid(s)
* A circumstance that leaves room for another 24 follow-up - possibly with Kate Morgan as lead?
