Long-time friends will know that I was an insufferable 24 fan in the 2000s.
Having watched the series again more recently, I feel... meh, towards it. It has its high points, but ultimately it was the same cycle over and over. Talented actors like Kate Mara, Sean Astin, Powers Booth, et al. were totally under-used. Flat, stock characters filled in way too often. Plot were re-cycled over and over (did every season have a mole at CTU?) And Jack Bauer was almost never wrong -- which in retrospect makes it all too ridiculous.
This new condensed 12-hour miniseries promises to do away with a lot of that. By not feeling the need to put in a lot of 'filler' to carry on a full 24 hour cycle, while still covering a single day's events, the producers promise a tauter thriller -- and I couldn't be more pleased.
Jack Bauer's return to TV is to me like... the return of Indiana Jones to cinema. For my problem with the quality of stories Jack tended to find himself in especially as the year went on, I still enjoyed the character immensely. This 21st century guy who is every bit a product of the threats, the infrastructures, the realpolitiks of our time, who like all of us wants to find a 'normal' life -- but what is 'normal', and can a man like Jack -- or any of us -- ever really enjoy it if we get it? The series has him jumping from one goal to the next, just like the rest of us; trying to please people whose aims are often not so noble; and Jack himself rarely has the luxury of being virtuous, either.
I keep forgetting that there is a new series coming out well... imminently! So I was pleased to see that Facebook reported it trending now that a trailer is out. It's been four years, and soon it's time to return to that world. I can't wait!
