Since I can't really focus on writing anything else, I figured I'd try the following prompt for the hell of it. Also because after writing
this I have been trying to figure some things out about it.
Prompt: Just for fun, create an NPC for your muse, someone who would interact with your muse in a way that no one else does. What would they be like, and what would their connection be to your muse? How do you think they would interact with the other muses in your character’s world?
The twelve years that Remus spent wandering around on his own from November 1981 to September 1993 are a big mystery. Usually when I try to explore that bit of his story he seems to shy away, but every now and then I get some glimpses that I can work with. In one of those glimpses, Evelyn was "found." ... Actually, she was in a lot of little glimpses, which is why I did
this fic with different 'scenes' rather than trying to put everything into one piece.
When he meets her, Evelyn is a (Muggle) woman in her early twenties, who owns a pub in the town where Remus is staying at. She was born and raised in that town and she owns the place because she inherited it from her father, who had recently passed away. It is because she was raised around a place like that that she knows how to watch people, and why she is so interested in those who pass by or stop at the pub. At first Evelyn and Remus just talk for weeks, eventually he kisses her, and that night they begin a relationship that can be best defined as 'friends with benefits.' Since Remus needs to keep moving since he needs a job, and he is in that stage of his life where he absolutely refuses to create any sort of real bond with anyone, after two months he leaves the town but despite everything he tries to do to keep himself away...he doesn't. He visits Evelyn every now and then for three years, and every time he does they fall back into that comfortable pattern of conversations and spending time together. She thinks that he's just somewhere near by, while he's basically apparating every now and then. Hey, you've got to take advantage of being a wizard, right?
Now, for my version of Remus, in his backstory he falls in love with Sirius during their years at Hogwarts. In the time that he's traveling around (including when he meets Evelyn, of course), Remus is having one hell of a time living without his best friends and without the man he loves. And he knows that he should hate him because he had "betrayed" the Potters, but he doesn't. He's still very much in love with him, and that is one of the many reasons why he doesn't want any sort of romantic bond with anyone. He had love, and he lost it. He doesn't want to gain it again only to lose it once more. Heh, and actually, in those years Remus keeps mostly to himself though he does look for 'companions' every now and then, and 98% of the time they are women. Not men. Men remind him of Sirius, even when they are nothing alike. That is one reason why Evelyn manages to get through his defenses - she's a woman who looks nothing like Sirius.
Her humor and personality is a lot like the ones his friends have, though, and I think that's the main reason why Remus finds that sense of comfort with her. She never presses/pressures him for answers he doesn't want to give, she lets him have the space he needs and never tries to hold him down, and Remus needs that. A lot. Because, at that time, he is going through so many issues that he doesn't know what to do with them. They don't spend enough time together for Remus to truly let himself fall in love with her, but he does care for her enough and develops a sense of trust enough to tell her a bit about his parents and about London. Because, to her, he isn't a wizard or a werewolf. He's just a guy from London who's traveling by, and is obviously running away from ghosts that she can never save him from.
As to how she would interact with the people from his world... Remus believes that she would get along with his friends just fine. He doesn't know what Sirius would think about it, but he never lets himself truly figure out that answer. What mostly gets to Remus (mainly since introducing him to his friend wasn't really a possibility at the time) was how she would fit into his world, should he ever introduce her to it. Would she be okay with him being a wizard? A werewolf? His mother was a Muggle like Evelyn, and he saw how she reacted to him becoming a werewolf. Just the possibility of her becoming like her terrified him, because she was really the only person that he felt comfortable enough with at the time (at least enough to not cut all ties at once).
Remus changed a lot in the years that he was gone, but the fact that he wasn't completely alone made a difference. If that had been the case, Remus would have shut himself out more than what he had already done, and having someone like Evelyn in his life helped. She didn't 'save him,' because she couldn't have and she knew this, but they did end up caring about each other. For Remus, that was enough to create some sort of bond, even if it was nothing like the one that he had shared with Sirius before.
