Author's Notes: Written for the April 22 prompt at 31_days - "a nice blend of scientific and sentimental".  As usual with my married Ed and Winry stories, takes place in roughly the same universe as The Highest Happiness, which now also includes Welcome Home and Real Estate.  Knowledge of those stories is beneficial but not necessary.

Where Ed woke up - face pillowed against his wife’s chest - was not bad at all. In fact, if his circumstances were any different, he would have been rather pleased, actually.

What woke him up, however, was the persistent crying of his infant son, which made him less than pleased.

He groaned and tried to bury his face in Winry’s breast. She stirred, tugging at his hair. “Your turn,” she murmured sleepily. He groaned again, then quieted as an idea came to him. He shifted to press a kiss onto her collarbone. She giggled, still drowsy, but pushed him away when he tried to kiss her neck. “Baby first, wife later,” she said firmly. Ed grumbled as he obediently slipped out of their bed, shivering in the cold air.

He stumbled to his son’s crib in the next room. “What’s the matter now, Eddie?” he asked, rubbing the sleep from his eyes with one hand. He leaned over the crib to investigate. His son frowned up at him, no longer wailing but still letting out the occasional whimper. “Shhh, I’m here now. Daddy’s here, all right?” Ed soothed, brushing the wispy golden hair atop the infant’s head. He yawned as he lifted the baby to his shoulder.

“Now what’s wrong with you tonight, hmm? You don’t need a change,” he thought aloud, checking to confirm his words. Eddie burbled into his shoulder and Ed quickly pulled him back to put a towel in between his son’s mouth and his bare skin. “No messes on Daddy tonight, all right? I don’t wanna have to take another shower this late.” Ed looked at the empty bottles stacked on the table on the other side of the room, counting them carefully. “…Four, five. There’s no way you’re hungry already, kiddo,” he muttered.

Eddie made a soft noise of agreement and Ed glanced down at him, one eyebrow raised suspiciously. “You’re way too happy to have had a bad dream. Were you lonely?” he said, picking the infant up from his shoulder and leaning in until their noses were touching. “Is that it? You made Daddy leave Mommy’s warm bed because you were lonely?” he asked in a singsong. Eddie giggled, reaching up to pat at Ed’s cheeks with both of his hands.

“You are one cruel boy, Eddie,” he continued, voice light. Eddie poked him in the eye and he winced. “Ouch! Shi-I mean, uh, sheesh. I take it back,” he grumped. He shifted the baby to the crook of his arm, rocking gently. “Where were we last night? Were we on the noble gases?” he crooned, giving an exaggerated yawn. Eddie followed his example, little mouth opening wide and blue baby eyes slowly blinking up at him. “Mmmm. The symbol for helium is He; it’s a gas at room temperature…”

A few more minutes of recitation later, Eddie was snoring gently in his crib. Ed smiled as he gently kissed the soft bangs on his forehead. “It’ll be more interesting when you’re older, I promise,” he whispered, pulling the infant’s blanket up and patting it.

Winry smiled as he slid back into bed, rolling over to face him with half-lidded eyes. “New diaper?”

“Nah. I think he couldn’t sleep and was feeling lonely,” Ed replied, scooting closer. Winry buried her hands in his loose hair as he slowly kissed her.

“I heard you talking,” she said when he pulled away. “Telling him a bedtime story?”

“Something like that.” Ed smirked, leaning in to kiss her again, when she gasped and jerked backwards. He scowled as she pulled out of his arms. “What?”

“Your automail’s like ice, Ed,” Winry whispered, her bare legs twitching away from his left one.

“Never thought I’d see the day when you’d want to avoid automail, Winry.” He tried to follow her but she kept shifting away from his reach.

“Stop that! Go back to sleep!” she ordered, swatting at his hands.

“But we’re both already awake,” Ed argued - quite logically, in his opinion. “Might as well do something while we’re up.”

“Then I can work on Mr. Sanderson’s new elbow joint and you can go answer those letters from Central you’ve been avoiding,” Winry returned smartly. She attempted to slide around him but Ed was too fast, cornering her at the head of their bed.

“Why don’t we work on warming up my cold leg instead?” he suggested.

“Well…” Winry pretended to think about it while his hands dropped from her shoulders to her hips. The skin under his palms rose into gooseflesh in the night air.  “I suppose as your mechanic it’s only my job to make sure you’re - functioning - properly.”

Ed didn’t bother to hide his leer as he pulled them both under the covers. “I pay very well.”

“Hmm, I think I should be the judge of that,” Winry replied, and she giggled as she threw the sheets over their heads, hiding them from view.
