Madness is hereditary, Cain knows. The queen’s own grandfather was so insane that his dissolute son had to act as regent for years; he wonders if her majesty ever worries.

There have been whispers about the earls of the line of Hargreaves for generations. Cruelty, obsession, barbarism - madness - all of them run doubly thick in his veins. His cursed, malicious father; his pitiful, wasted, mad mother - Aunt Augusta -
The queen is, perhaps, old enough to be past dreading insanity. Her children, though, surely know enough about their own family history to have similar fears. Do they ever wake at night, wondering how long until the family curse lays its fingers on them, wondering whether they will know when madness takes them, wondering if they are even sane right now…
Merry, he hopes, is safe. Not only does she not understand - she knows about the brutality the Hargreaves family has displayed for years, but not the insanity with which it goes hand-in-hand - but her blood is mixed with that of her mother’s family, and not pure. Like his.
