Author's Notes: Written for the April 13 prompt at 31_days - "especially when it rains".

It is raining when she bursts from the prison doors.

Hama throws her head back and laughs. It could not be more obvious that the spirits approve her actions. Rainwater - fresh, not salt, and mere droplets, not the ocean for which she longs - falls into her eyes, her open mouth. She takes it all in greedily, arms flung out as she sprints away from the site of her first victory.

But more to come. She may not have been able to free her brothers and sisters from the Fire Nation, but that does not matter. She is the one favored by the Moon and Ocean - she is the one who was able to escape. She can avenge the Southern Water Tribe alone. The Fire Nation will learn to fear the name of Hama, last of the free waterbenders. Lightning flashes; she shrieks her defiance at the thunder that follows.

The rain falls on her like a benediction, like the blessing of the spirits themselves. It soaks the bone-dry rags they forced on her. The dirt melts to mud beneath her feet and streaks up her legs, cold and wet and so gloriously welcome.

Hama stares up at the dark clouds and can’t stop laughing.
