31_days - "o beauty so ancient and young".
Tetra examines herself in the mirror. Her skin is not soft or beautiful enough for a fairy tale princess, the lines at the corners of her eyes from squinting through sun and salt spray are hardly flattering, and her hair has always had the consistency of straw.
The crown atop her head is crooked. She reaches up to fix it, teeth appearing briefly in the glass as she bites her lip.
She has ruled her ship with an iron fist for years, but she has never wanted a kingdom.
Link appears over her shoulder. “They’re ready,” he says quietly.
Tetra’s hand hesitates. The crown - her crew had not told her they were melting down some of their hard-won treasure to make it until they presented it to her, a coronation gift - still leans slightly to the right. She remembers the portraits in the castle underneath the sea and wonders if they would look at her with disapproval now. The thought makes her grin, fierce as any shark.
She may be just one Zelda in a long line, but she is Tetra first and foremost. Frowns on the painted faces of royals long dead do not scare her.
“You know you’re quite terrifying when you do that,” Link says pleasantly.
She turns away from the mirror, crown still tilted and smile still sharp. “Then I’m ready.”
