What would our world look like had Prohibition never happened? See? I mean, the first World War had just happened, and everyone who made it out alive desperately needs a drink. And they go and make a law that says 'no drinking.' Seventy million dollars a year, in 1921 money, handed to thugs for no reason. Bugsy Siegel. 'Lucky' Luciano. Myer Lansky... And ever since then this city's entire economy has relied on... Kingpins. This is the secret history of New York City. It's what no one talks about. We NEED them. Arnold Rothstein. Mr. Big. Murder, Inc. Wilson Fisk. Gotti. There was always crime. Always... Human nature.
But we created Kingpins."
-Brian Micheal Bendis, Daredevil vol. 2 #56
It's quotes like that that make Daredevil, particularly Bendis's run on it, one of my all-time favorite comics. It's an epic crime drama, more about a human vigilante than a superhero. There's no super-villains, just drugs, murder, mafia, and the FBI.
