(no subject)
My meeting with my new graduate advisor today was AWESOME. She's exuberant, a little bit eccentric, and seems enthusiastic about working with me. She's done field work on many hominid sites in Europe, has worked closely with some of the most famous Neanderthal material, is associate director and manager of the casting (bone/fossil material) program at UPenn, and works in human osteology and skeletal biology. This is someone who can help me to get my foot in the door with the things that I want to pursue, and she wants to get me started down that path ASAP. She's talking about having me doing field work on one of the European hominid sites (fingers crossed for Dmanisi) possibly as early as next summer, and definitely by the following year.
OMG, I'm so psyched! ...I think today was the first day that I really felt like a grad student.
For those who are either genuinely interested or really bored, this is more about my advisor and what she does. I will also likely end up working with this archaeology prof. And this is where I will be going to class and working. Eeeee!
The down side of my day was the trip to the grocery store. I swear, I was about to cry in the middle of the store due to the prices of food up here. However, I managed to find some really cheap little steaks so I won't end up (more) iron deficient, as well as some actual fruits and vegetables. And a whole lot more Ramen.
Oh, I forgot to mention -- My package from melantha came yesterday!! I now have snack food to last a month. And real Kona coffee! Mwahaha! I love my friends who don't let me starve (or go without my caffiene fix). ::warm fuzzies::
And now for the fandom related portion of the journal entry...
New Stargate Atlantis tonight! Yay! dano_140 doesn't understand why I like McKay. Somehow I don't think telling him, "Because he's snarky brainy sex on legs" will help him to understand. ::snerk::
I've been putting a lot of work into the RPG that I mod. I'm ready to take a step back from that and just play for a couple of days now. I think I'll go catch up on all my threads as soon as I'm done with this journal entry...
I've also been working on my December fic for daily_deviant here and there. I think it's going well, but the characters in question are being a bit uncooperative. I was 1,500 words in before they even spoke to each other. ::snerk:: Damn, I still need to come up with something for September... Yeah, I do things all ass-backward.
It's pretty amazing, really. As soon as I quit working an exhausting, mind-numbing job, my brain started producing all kinds of creative stuff. Granted, I'm just putting that into RPing and fic writing at the moment, but it gives me hope that I might actually be able to pull that series of fantasy novels off one of these days after all.
Well, anyway, I'm off to RP now.
