Free Catalogs...I like free... evildoug September 16 2010, 14:19:29 UTC
I recall seeing a scimitar in the CAS/Hanwei catalog a while back, and then googled it. Found it here only to remember just HOW curved that blade really is. Could poke your OWN eye out with that thing.

That katana linked to is pretty darn SWEET!

If you're looking at making the investment, I highly recommend going online to a bunch of manufacturers and asking them to mail you their free catalog. This will give you a wider selection of things to look at than you'll find online. Also, you can hit your local merchants, either in person OR over the phone (saves trips if they ain't got it), with the product numbers listed in the catalog and then you can get to see the sword in person (AND, I might add, buy it cheaper than you can online (both price and the saving on shipping). Websites are a little scant on such info as one would find in an actual catalog.

I learned the hard way that you can't go into most stores and say, "Yes, I'd like to look at the CAS Iberia Agincourt sword." 9 times out of 10, they won't have the foggiest idea what you're talking about. BUT, go in and say, "Yes, do you have CAS/Hanweii blade product number 080-PP Agincourt in stock?" and they can punch it up on the computer! Sadly, even our usual sword procurement place seems to be slowly phasing out such things, so you may have to purchase online.

And, yeah, if you're wanting a 'battle ready' carbon steel blade that you could use, you PROBABLY don't want to go with a great sword the size of what was used in LotR. Having looked into great swords, yeah, I can HOLD a claymore in a threatening position, but I sure as HECK wouldn't want to try to WIELD that sucker.

Saweeeeet! Mmmm, curvy goodness! Hilt is a bit plain, though. Mrf.

Yeah, it is. And it's slowly growing on me, too. But before I make a decision on it, I think I'll do as you suggest and get a crapton of catalogs and see what's available. If nothing jumps out at me and says, "YOU WANT ME!" then I'll probably go with the katana.

Though, the Armory you linked to does have this, which is more along the lines of what floats my boat, though the lack of scabbard is a problem.

Heh, at least you can hold it in a threatening position! There's no way I'd even be able to lift a claymore or flamberge in any pose except "MY ARM IS FALLING OFF!"
