WTF Did I just Watch?
I just finished watching the new Black Panther series (well 6 episode mini-series technically) and it was the worst piece of animated shit I have seen. It is the single most terribly written, animated, racist, sexist, downright offensive show I've seen.
For those that don't know Black Panther is the first black superhero that got his own book, created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby. I've heard good things about old comic runs of his and he once had a fight to a draw with Captain America in WW2 before they both shook hands and walked away. However from 2005 the writer was Reginald Hudlin (then current head of BET) who could well be described as the Michael Bay or Joel Schumacher of comics. Sufficed to say the run was terrible, but BET made a cartoon of it, based off that run, because he was in charge.
Just to give an example of the badness: In the first episode there's a flashback to WW2 where Cap and Panther fight. This time Cap is portrayed as a thug and gets taken down in a few seconds. Later on it has Panther's people refuse to give up a cure for cancer because the American's would "make a weapon of it". How do you make a weapon out of the cure for fucking cancer? Oh and it has the Vatican aid the villains in order to push Christianity on those "poor savages who still worship a Panther God".
The title character barely does anything in the series, seriously. Most of the time it's focused on the villains being 'EVIL' and oppressive rather than the main character doing anything. Also those main villains they were building up for 4-5 episodes were taken down like pussies. Hell the fucking Juggernaut was stopped by fucking sleeping gas. Now if it was that easy then the X-men and everyone else he was fighting he wouldn't be known as the "unstoppable".
The series also has a cringe inducing Obama cameo at the end. It hurt every pro Obama bone in my body.
Here's a trailer which has a guy in 8000 BC Africa say "Stay Cool, Stay Cool." and another say "Kiss my butt!" Also yes that is actually how it's animated throughout the show.
I think Boondocks summed up BET quite well.
