Trust

My eyes open. I am staring at a man who stands awkwardly, supported by a piece of wood my information banks tell me is a called a "cane". His eyes are covered by spectacles that are dark. He holds a hand out to me, telling me, "Take a step."

I step out of the programming chamber slowly, learning my physical reactions and reflexes as I do so. My grip begins to tighten and he cries out, until I let go. He shakes his hand for some strange reason.

"I am your creator, Dr. Timothy Wayneright. From this point on, you will call me 'Grandfather'. Do you understand?"

"Yes, Grandfather, I understand."

"Your name is R. Dorothy Wayneright. You may alternately be known as Dorothy 2 or Dorothy Soldano."

"May I ask a question, Grandfather?" He nods, which my data indicates a positive response. "Why do I have other names?"

At that moment, a large man, younger than my creator comes into the room. He smiles broadly when he sees me. "Ah, so she's ready, is she?"

"This is your builder," Grandfather says, "Miguel Soldano."

"Is this why one of my other names is Dorothy Soldano, Grandfather?"

"I'm touched, old boy," Soldano says, slapping a hand to his chest.

Grandfather shakes his head. "Don't think anything of it, Soldano. It's just in case something happens to me, nothing more. Now, Dorothy, as to your other name..." He walks out of the lab into a cavernous warehouse beyond. There stands a very large android, far larger than myself. "This is your sister, Dorothy 1."

I attempt to reach her mind via internal communications and find her silent. Clearly she has not been activated. We look nothing alike.

"The Memory that allowed me to create you, allowed me to create her as well."

Soldano looks up at her. "But she can't stand up against a Megadeus. That black one..."

There is a sharp noise as Grandfather raps his cane hard on the ground. "She's not made to fight, Soldano. I only made her because your financier insisted. Nothing can stand against that Megadeus. It's from before The Event, before when we all still had our Memories."

"You know that's why Beck wants her. He's..."

"Do not mention that man in my hearing again, Soldano! Tell him I've changed my mind. Neither of them belong to him."

"He's not going to like that. When he gets out of prison..."

"He won't be getting out if the Military Police have anything to say about it. Trust me, Soldano, everything will be fine."

Trust is a fragile thing...
