Guess What It's Time For?

If you guessed "random holiday picspam" you are right!

It's Simplicity Day
in honor of the anniversary of Henry David Thoreau's birth.

Now when I started making a picspam for today, I was torn between whether I wanted to do a "realistic" one (you know, with Thoreau quotes and simple, calming images) or go with what first popped into my head, namely this:

Something a little more...well, random. I think I am going to do a little of each.

This post will be the more random (who doesn't occasionally like their philosophical quotes interspersed with a little oddball humor?) and then I will do a followup of Thoreau.

"Things should be made as simple as possible, but not any simpler." - Albert Einstein

Simplicity is the property, condition, or quality of being simple or un-combined. It often denotes beauty, purity or clarity. Simple things are usually easier to explain and understand than complicated ones.

The opposite of simplicity is complexity. Simplicity can mean freedom from hardship, effort or confusion. It may also refer to a simple living lifestyle.

According to Occam's razor, all other things being equal, the simplest theory is the most likely to be true - hence the importance of the concept of simplicity in epistemology, or the study of the nature of knowledge. According to Thomas Aquinas, God is infinitely simple.

"Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication." - Leonardo da Vinci

(well, they LOOK sopisticated, don't they?)

"Simplicity is about subtracting the obvious, while adding the meaningful."

"Simplicity is the essence of happiness."

In case you think I'm being too silly about this, here's a quote from Thoreau himself: "Some circumstantial evidence is very strong, as when you find a trout in the milk."

Granted, it has nothing to do with simplicity, but I found it be a highly amusing and non-sequitor rich quote, so I'm sticking with my plan!

Manifest plainness,
Embrace simplicity,
Reduce selfishness,
Have few desires.

Making the simple complicated is commonplace;
making the complicated simple,
awesomely simple, that's creativity.

"The aspects of things that are most important to us are hidden
because of their simplicity and familiarity."

"Simplicity means the achievement of maximum effect with minimum means."

"You can't have everything - where would you keep it?"

When the richness of an experience
is increased in a manner that facilitates
the perception of the overall intent,
by all means don't skimp. Add more!

"Live simply, so others may simply live." - Gandhi
