Hurricane Help Line Report

Sep 04, 2005 20:32

It wasn't very busy down there today, but we did get some calls. They are setting up two camps for evacuees here in Oklahoma. Right now, they're expecting them to stay for 18 months, at least. I think I heard them say there will be between 2,000-3,000 of them here! How can there be this many people in need EVERYWHERE?

Even as quiet as it was, there were some interesting, touching stories. A group of teachers from a local middle school want to provide school supplies for all the evacuee children in Oklahoma. A nurse was sobbing on the phone, begging to find some way to help. A woman called saying her young daughter has an organ her grandfather left her before he died and she wants to give it to one of the churches that lost everything.

I put my name down on the lists to help at the camps and I'm going back to work the phones tomorrow and Tuesday for sure. Today they had to tell people not to come down, because they didn't have enough phones for them all.

Funny how something like this makes the world feel so much smaller, and everyone reaches out a little more to those around them. Too bad we can't remember to do that when things are fine.
