Thanks for this!

A friend and I went to see Taken two weeks ago and were so angry at the potrail of women in it. When afterwards we tried to name positive role models we had a really hard time, and were a bit depressed by that. We were trying to limit ourselves to non sci-fi/ fantasy since it would be nice if girls/ women had roll models that were strong and cool in this world, now, instead of something that will just happen in the future.

Hmm, you’re talking about modern-day females without special abilities who aren’t dealing with unrealistic experiences like magic or monsters or men from outer space?

Wow, that IS tough.

Who'd you come up with?

Are we talking TV or movies or both?

Let me see what I can do:

In addition to Dani Reese (Life); Abby and Ziva (NCIS); Tami Taylor (FNL); Garcia, JJ, and Prentiss (Criminal Minds); ...

~ Gillian Foster, (Lie To Me) Okay, the show has only had four episodes, and there’s foreshadowing that she might be the unsuspecting doting wife of a philandering husband, so we’ll have to see where that goes. But she’s a full partner to the series lead (which is kinda like being qualified enough to run a medical consulting firm with House), so she clearly knows her stuff. And, unlike him, she doesn’t allow her ability to see through people’s lies and manipulations to make her cynical and bitter. In fact, she has a delightfully cheery and upbeat attitude, *without* being a saccharine Pollyanna. Although she wears feminine clothing, she ( ... )

I have never seen the show, but I have heard good things about the character - Go tell me why I should love her!

Thought of some more, if they count (and it's not too annoying...)

If spies count:

~ Nikita (La Femme Nikita)

~ Sydney Bristow (ALIAS) ... though I never did watch 'til the end so maybe she did have some weird "chosen one" thing going for her.

~ Deb Morgan, Rita Bennett, Lt. Maria LaGuerta (Dexter)

NEVER annoying to discuss beloved shows/characters!

I only saw like two-three partial episodes of Dexter, and a season or so of Alias, but yeah, strong women.

I have never seen La Femme Nikita at all. Since we seem to have very similar tastes, I probably should, huh?

Wow, your list is so so much better than ours. We kept naming women from the sci-fi series, Starbuck, Lara Croft, Ripley in Aliens... when we realized that we couldn't name modern ones (there may have been too many beer consumed at that point).

Your description of Gillian Foster makes me want to watch that show.

She is fully 90-95% of the reason I will keep watching the show.

Hey! I took up the challenge! Go promote your favorite female characters!
