Guess what I have in my house right now?

I haven't had the time yet to go get out the camera and then load the pics online, but here's a link to a related image. (Only two though ( Read more... )

Hmm, he might try for now. But once they grow up, believe me, they can hold their own.

First of all, they often grow to about 25-35 pounds, especially the males. And, secondly, they are TOUGH for such funny looking things. I've known of wild raccoons that have killed cats and seriously injured dogs.

They actually make great pets, the mom of my brother's friend had some growing up ... except you can NEVER leave them alone in your house. They're far too clever and their little hand-paws are way too dexterous.

It's like having a monkey with the food-seeking interest of a Lab and the curiosity and interest in shiny things of a ferret.

Dangerous combination unsupervised.

(Once when we went camping, we left the window down and a wild raccoon got into our car. The only thing out was a bag of cough drops and she didn't just open the bag...she UNWRAPPED EACH ONE before eating them!)

Actually, I had a friend who had a ferret once and I notice a lot of similarities, even with these ones being so very very young. They make some of the same weird noises (Surprisingly noisy! You don't think of raccoons making noise, do you?) And have some of the same .... "special" odor issues.

Which makes sense, since raccoons and ferrets are cousins.
