A sprawling, non-sensical post about Final Fantasy X-2 and XI, with pictures!
Disclaimer: I apologize about this in advance. My brain threw up.
So I started replaying FFX-2, because I missed it like crazy. One of my most favoritest jobs in X-2 is Gun Mage, aka Blue Mage.
Talking with fellow adventurer, in-game separated-at-birth sister and FFX/FFX-2 fan Sive (Sutekidane), she had this to say.
Gun Mage + Catnip = broken
Now, this is a true statement (although the Catnip accessory breaks Gunner a little bit more in X-2, since Trigger Happy with the latent active does like a bajillion damage). I got to thinking about it, and I realized...
I shouldn't be surprised that Blue Mage in FFXI is as broken as it is (although, again, if you're Xerlic, any job you play is broken).
Let's compare, shall we?
Here is FFX-2.
Although the repitoire of spells you can learn in X-2 is not nearly as large as it is in XI, that doesn't stop it from letting you learn some of the most powerful enemy skills in the game. Also, play your Fiend Hunter right (even at lower levels!) and you're doing quadruple damage on all of the poor saps you encounter. Lastly, look how sexy Yuna is. Broken.
Now, XI.
I guess when everyone cried for years and years to have BLU put in the game, SE was like, "Ok, you want a Blue Mage? We'll give you a damn Blue Mage who can learn 100 spells, heal, DD, tank at lower levels, customize their Job Traits, solo like a BST in higher levels, and kick pretty much anyone's ass in Ballista."
Featured here are Dubhe and Flightofdawn, my two favoritest Blue Mages, embarassed to be seen in a lolLiveJournal. Having seen them both in action just confirms that Blue Mage is next to get taken down a notch. Dubhe is what I guess you would call and endgame BLU, with a million merits and WIP gear sets. Flight is rounding the corner to level 70, and I've seen him at different levels owning the shit out of various Vana'dielian monsters.
By the way, my apologies to both of you. I gave you a Joyeuse and some other sword I picked at random that you probably wouldn't be caught dead using.
Final thought: my loverman Flight has a level 75 Summoner main (and granted, Red Mage and Beastmaster also at level 75). Summoner turned Blue Mage... and Yuna is always Gun Mage in my X-2 games!
