Well, the news on the next Mortal Kombat game have surfaced... and as a fan of Mortal Kombat ever since the beginning back in 1992, I really don't know if I'm at all happy about it. In fact, right now I feel more disappointed than anything. I've always considered myself a die-hard MK fan, and right now I'm honestly worried that Midway, the makers of Mortal Kombat, have indeed found a way to kill the MK fan in me.
The long-rumored "Mortal Kombat 8" appears to be a crossover game, mixing MK characters with superheroes of DC Comics. The game is called Mortal Kombat Vs. D.C. Universe.
I'm really hoping right now that this isn't canon, that it isn't a true sequel to the MK series... but it seems definite that this is THE Mortal Kombat 8 that has been in the works. They've said that the next MK game was going under some drastic changes, that it was going to be a big departure from the usual Mortal Kombat... and I'm afraid this change might be TOO drastic, that it is a total departure from MK, and not necessarily one I like.
I haven't given up hope on MK yet with this. Part of me hopes that this isn't true, but I can't really deny what it is. I guess all I can really hope for is that this is just a side MK game, and not an extension of the series; not the true MK8 if you will. I know it's already been done with Street Fighter Vs. X-Men or whatever they did, but the idea of Mortal Kombat characters fighting with superheroes in comic books really sounds like too crazy of an idea to me. To me, it's just two totally different entities that shouldn't be mixed. For instance, maybe it's just me, but I just couldn't picture something like Star Wars Vs. G.I. Joe, or some sort of union with Slayer and G-Unit, and I couldn't imagine that fan bases of either entities would be happy with such a thing.
I was never much of a comics guy, but I do like Batman. But other than that, right now, I honestly am not looking forward to this new direction. I'll be following it, as I'm not so driven away from this as to abandon Mortal Kombat altogether. Hell, I'm sure I'll play the game when it comes out, and I'll probably like it. But it definitely doesn't look like the Mortal Kombat I've come to know and love.
I realize I'm ranting on just a video game... but a lot of people know me for being a big Mortal Kombat fan, a Trekkie when it comes to MK if you will, and I know there's bigger fans of MK than me out there. Mortal Kombat has made various impacts that all go beyond video games, so I'm sure others would agree with me that MK is more than just some other video game. I'm sure I sounded like a total geek about all this, but I don't care... I'm just a big Mortal Kombat fan who needed to vent.
