First Adventure

I ran the first session of my new D&D campaign today. Everyone has awesome backstories and I can't wait to see what they do. If you guys found this place (Cameron, Baele, Jeff) please stop reading, as I'm about to go into some stuff I'd rather you didn't know.

First off, I was a little surprised how long the intro took. I suppose I shouldn't have been. Anyways, they've all been more or less introduced, although Jhonen is more on the 'less' end of that. It's going to be difficult incorporating him into the party in a way that seems natural. The other two are 'partyized' pretty well. So now I've got me a cloistered Cleric out to see the world, his Ranger guide, and a mysterious fugitive who happens to be traveling in the same direction.

I'm afraid I destroyed Jhonen's reputation. Cameron is trying to play up his character's Disguise skill. He passed me a note with the description of his character's character: "Pail with liver spots. Oldish looking". I couldn't help myself--"You see an aged, spotty bucket enter the room". You just can't unsay things like that. I'm going to be hearing bucket jokes directed at Cameron's character through level 20.

I also think I was a little desperate with the plot hook. It looked like they were going to leave the village before I could introduce the adventure I had prepared. Since I had deliberately denied one of the characters any useful equipment and was going to use the adventure to fix that, I took drastic measures. I put the entire village on lockdown, stating that the local oppressive authority was looking for Jhonen (who is at this point a fugitive). He was wearing a pretty convincing disguise when he got into trouble, but the party does need some funds and an excuse to not be around until things quiet down. The adventure provides both of these, but it comes across as a little contrived to me (which it is, but I don't want it to seem that way).

Anyways, it's on to the orc-hunt. I wonder if every campaign starts out with an orc-hunt. It isn't a very traditional orc-hunt, but it does involve the potential slaying of some orcs. I hope the party ends up deciding to save the orcs from the elves. That's the coolest contingency I've planned for.
