Or maybe black people are treated like shit in our society and always have been.

All of my neighbors in DC are black and happen to be outstanding, hard-working, middle class citizens that care a great deal for their community. On the other hand, the white-ass-white-bitches that I grew up with in the suburbs (including MY near-transparent whiteness) ALL got into trouble with the police. Two of these whitey's from my inner circle died from drug overdoses, another went to jail at age 24 and won't get out until he is nearly 50. We were all hoodlums of some variety. No doubt the white, suburban culture I was immersed in at the time didn't approve of this, but we did it anyway. There are always bad apples. We had it easy in a wealthy and safe suburb and we still fucked it up.

Now what if you don't have safety nets, or money, or education, or stability? What if your great-great-grandfather was considered someones property? What if your parents weren't allowed to vote just 40 years ago? What if you lived in a society that embraced stereotypes?

Statistics may say one thing, but I'm willing to bet my right arm (and only remaining pinky) they also correlate strongly to poverty, education and disenfranchisement. To say that black people inherently do ANYTHING differently from white people is just bad news. Black people and white people are virtually identical from a genetic standpoint, only artificial barriers like culture, education and affluence separate us. We are largely responsible for this divide, along with our American (and Dutch!) forefathers and have made little corrective action to fix it. As for the people you saw in the library - maybe they were products of an environment that we helped to create, or perhaps they were just hoodie assholes. Either way, I hope you won't let a couple knuckleheads affect your perception of such a large group.

Sorry for being menacing with this post, but I haven't checked your blog in a while, and this doesn't sound like you at all. What up whitey?

Joe
