i have a paper to write and no motivation...
we watched gunner palace today. i enjoyed it, although it was bitter sweet. one of the most skin crawling quotes of the movie i found was
"I don't think ... anywhere in history has someone killed someone else and something better has come out of it. It's just ... not possible."
he seemed so sad, so defeated. in a society which tells him his purpose in life is to protect and defend, after he returns from iraq, what is there left of him to protect and defend? having spent more than my share of time with marines, i learned that they all knew their lives were expendable. but their arrogance and cockiness got them through it all, and it becomes more than being expendable. you're a hero, decorated for bravery. this kid had nothing left in him to be arrogant or cocky. just a sincere wish to survive, go home, and see his family. protect and defend. another soldier noted that he didn't feel he was defending his country. rather, he was policing another country. i think this is one of the main problems with the war. we're policing another country, of which most soldiers know nothing, let alone the language. the cultural and language barrier must make it the hardest... it's just a huge mess.
it makes me sad :-(
