The past is a funny thing, flooding your senses with nostalgia. You can remember the way the air smelled, the way everything looked, the sounds and people you could hear, the taste of a food you ate, and the feel of the warmth or cold in the air. It all comes rushing back to you, in one big gush. You smile at first, and maybe even want to cry. Its a feeling that strangely comforts. A time that you wish you could go back to, but am happy to know youve come as far as you have come.
Its a crazy trip down memory lane while going through your belongings. Especially when you are moving. Because most of the time you are deciding what to keep or what to leave behind, or even more what to get rid of completely. Its great getting that rush of familiarity. That comfort of a favorite sweater that belonged to a friend, but has magically made it into your possession. The laughter from reading a note that was passed to you in class from you best friend, and was kept because you didnt get caught. Or the confusion from an old ticket stub you had to keep, but for the life you, you have no idea what movie it was to, or who you were even with. Its harder with things that arent so happy. Like a picture of an old love. It brings back the questions of " Was it a mistake?, Where are they now? Should we still be together?" All and all, bittersweet.
Its even more weird seeing someone elses past, especially your current love. A card from an ex, a shirt from a concert they went to years ago, a gift they opened but never used. It brings a sense of curiosity, good and bad. "What were they like back then? Do they miss the people and good times they had? Do they wish things were different? What brought them to keep these things? Whats the attachment?" Its nice to see the belongings that make up a person, for good and bad.
But what makes the past great is looking back, and then looking at what you have now. You can look around and still see bits and pieces of your past that brings you to this moment, but that mesh so nicely with your present and on into your future. It brings a strange feeling of comfort and even pride to know youve come as far you have come.
