Steve wasn't a very verbose guy. Which might be why he and Danny got along so well. The man could fill the silences Steve created without any awkwardness. He could also read Steve like a book and sometimes that irritated Steve but other times he made life so much easier. Danny was a honorary secret SEAL, not that Steve would tell him. When he had seen Danny mime I heart you on the cliff Steve knew he should say or do something. Every time they did connect emotionally it made Steve felt ill at ease but it also made him feel better.
It wasn't that Steve didn't feel the same way, he did, but Danny was such a long-winded person. Sometimes it was hard to get a word in edgewise. Maybe it was time to be a sneaky SEAL? Use his stealth technique to let Danny know how he feels. Sure the words were more powerful, but Steve was much better at the show me part of show and tell.
When Steve arrived at work the next day he was the first one there. Sneaking into Danny's office he laid the peppermint patties and a rose on his desk. Sitting at his desk when the others arrived Steve was using a pencil to scratch under his cast. Watching Danny specifically he saw the bright smile the man threw off. As Steve watched Danny opened and snitched a patty into his mouth. Closing his eyes Danny looked euphoric as he enjoyed the patty. It was a good day to Steve. Even when they got called out to a crime scene.
The following Monday Steve placed three white roses and a bag of Masada's on Danny's desk. Waiting for the show Steve watched as Danny arrived and saw him stop and proceed consciously into his office. A moment of concern crossed Steve's face and he was almost out of his chair when Danny's smile reappeared. Relaxing Steve smiled to himself. Next gift out of the bag the caution was understandable with the Five-O team. It was a quiet day for Five-O to catch up on paperwork.
It was Friday before Steve could give Danny's his latest gift. When Danny arrived he found a complete CD/DVD boxed set of Bruce Springsteen on his desk. The smile Steve felt all the way in his office. Suddenly Steve realized that sometimes words were highlight overrated. Giving Danny the gifts had started as a way to let him know he wasn't alone, but maybe Steve needed to left Danny know the gifts were from him. Deciding it was time to say something to Danny. Maybe words were needed in this case. Moving out of his office Steve waited until he had Danny's attention. Then very slowly he mimicked Danny's I heart you from the cliff.
Standing with a goofy grin Steve watched Danny who smiled at him. The wait wasn't long as Danny came out of his office and stopped a few feet from Steve. Steve's smile was infectious and Danny's face held a similar goofy grin. "Steven."
"Danno." Soft chuckles.
Out of his office Chin said loudly. "I am not calling Army rescue for either of you on your next date!"
