He was back in the past again. For someone who wasn’t so used to the change, it would have been disorienting to go from the modern-world to this primeval wasteland, but Ethan had been travelling the anomalies for over fifteen years; they no longer had the power to phase him.
He preffered the past. Less clutter, less noise, and no humans.
He knew Danny would come after him. He made sure to leave a little parting gift in each era before stepping through another anomaly, just to taunt him. Danny would follow him and keep on following him until he caught up. Ethan just wanted to forget him.

The fight was over quickly. Ethan was a capable hunter and his reflexes were impeccable. The large cat died with a parting growl before going slack. The sudden dead-weight made Ethan stumble before he dropped the body to the ground. There was a good three day’s worth of food here, not to mention fur and claws. He wouldn’t waste anything; he’d made a habit of it years back and never bothered to break it.
He knelt and got to work with his knife, filleting the creature from chin to crotch before cutting the meat into strips. He paused for a moment to watch the cat bleed. He no longer batted an eye at the smell or the sight of it but he was reminded suddenly of his brother. He clenched his hands into fists. Danny was following him. He just knew it.
He imagined for a moment it was his brother lying gutted before him and was surprised to feel bile rise in his throat at the thought. He had imagined killing his brother a thousand times before, in a thousand worse ways than this, and it never bothered him before.
Incited, he slashed recklessly at the cat carcaress, cutting and cutting until the body was in ribbons and he was soaked in blood. With a wordless howl of rage, he shoved his hand deep into its ruined chest and closed his hand around its heart. He ripped the bloody muscle from the flesh and stopped, breathing hard.
And then, he waited.
Danny must have been close behind, because it was only a few hours until he caught up. Ethan saw the smoke a mile off and followed it soundlessly to its source. There he found his brother sitting dejectedly in the firelight. He drew back his arm and threw his weight forward, watching the cold, bloody heart of the big cat smack Danny right in the chest, leaving a smear of red down the front of his shirt.
A wicked grin split his lips. Ethan stepped out into the cirlce of light, a grotesque shadow covered in blood.
"Hello, brother."
Danny screamed.
