Well, here I am again. I’m out onsite again, and this time it’s near the town of Ubobo. I am, however, staying at the Crossroads Motel in Calliope. If you still have no idea where that is, then Calliope is about a half hour’s drive or so west of Gladstone. Gladstone is just a little south of Rockhampton.
Even I didn’t know precisely where Gladstone was until a few days ago, just that it was up the coast somewhere.
Chris gave me a lift to the office, leaving home at 7am Thursday. The traffic was surprisingly good at that time and I got to the Triassic office in Northgate around half-past. Vehicles where then organized and such, and we left Brisbane just before 9am.
We stopped for fuel at Caboolture and then continued to Maryborough South, where we stopped for lunch a bit before noon. We then continued on, finally turning off the Bruce Highway at Miriam Vale. This would have been almost 4pm.
We then drove over the range to Ubobo. This road made the one to Springbrook/Mt Tambourine, or the one around Mt Nebo look good. Not only did it wind back and forth with one, or sometimes both, sides being a sheer precipice, but it was barely one lane, and unpaved. Some bits were also quite steep. Quite pretty, but rather dangerous when also trying to keep up with Paul.
After locating the site I then drove another 45min into Calliope. I was having a mild panic attack most of the way as I was dangerously low on fuel. I made it to Calliope with the gauge below E and put over 58 liters of fuel in.
I then went to the hotel, checked in, and went to my room. In doing so, I tried to park in front of the room, and forgetting the height of the 4WD promptly broke the carport fluro. Not a good start. The room’s basic but reasonable. No wireless broadband or even a phone for dialup internet though. I do have a CDMA modem, but am loathe to use it much. There’s also no mobile reception on-site or nearby, either regular or CDMA, though I get reasonable reception in Calliope.
