i think later on in the year, when we start doing poetry, i want to do more with poems and songs. last year, the librarian did this thing with the kids where they had to find a poem (in a BOOK! WHOA CRAZY) that they thought represented them, then a song to match the theme. so like this one kid chose this poem "black is best" and then the james brown song "i'm black and i'm proud" and we read the poem and listened to the song together and it was awesome.

anyway, so i thought of this because i'm listening to simon and garfunkel, two of the most amazing musicians to exist, and "richard cory" came on and i remembered during student teaching i did this activity with the song and poem together. i sort of want to make it into a whole mini-unit and end it with the kids doing that library project, but i can't think of any (american) poems that have relevant songs off the top of my head. do you know any? help a kitten out!
