You remind me of my Grade 9 Science teacher. He was new to our high school the year my classmates and I started. I think he was new to teaching, too. The coolest teacher imaginable! He'd joke around with us and offer extra help and was the most patient teacher I'd ever met. I think even if the materials were hard and marks handed back weren't great, we still had little to complain about. "He hates me" was not one of the excuses I recall hearing when we all talked about him.
Then, for some reason, he was either transferred or left to work at another school the following year. He came back to our school the year after that and was my Grade 11 Chemistry teacher. I don't know what the heck happened to him during the year he was away. To this day I haven't figured out if some really bad shit happened to him in his personal life, or if the kids at his other school were so bad that he became really jaded and trained himself to be an asshole in order to survive. He came back worse than the other bad teachers we had at our school already. He was completely ruthless in Grade 11. He wouldn't joke around with the students anymore and was pretty rude/uncaring and his "help" included suggestions that we weren't reading the materials or that we should drop the class because we weren't interested.
You remind me of the way he used to be, and your students are lucky for it! No matter what happens, don't ever change, man!
