Sometimes the house shakes as the train rumbles by; the glass panes of the windows tremble in their frames, the walls quiver, Heechul tries to sleep. He wonders if he'll ever get a full night's sleep again, and he turns onto his side on the soft bedsheets and sees Shiwon, dozing deeply despite the brutal whistle of the train.

Sleeps like the dead, Heechul muses before rising silently from the bed. The carpet is rough against his feet as he walks out of his room and before a smaller room next door.

(Heechul remembers that when he was younger, his mother would take him to the toy store, and all Heechul ever wanted was a doll that looked a bit like he did. He remembers his mother saying, "Heechul, you know dolls are for girls. You're a boy. You should like cars, and trucks, and bugs.")

As he stands in front of the closed door, he wonders what would mother say now?, pushing open the door, the hinges creaking, and stepping into the room. He smiles when he sees his collection.

Dozens upon dozens of life-like figurines, wooden dolls, clay dolls, plush dolls. But his most cherished part of the collection, tucked into a corner of the room, are the dolls he made himself.

He walks to that corner now, where the dolls are placed two by two on shelves, one sitting alone on the bottom-most shelf, leaning to the side as though, like an infant, its head is too heavy for its body. Heechul likes that all his hand-made dolls are boys. He likes that they all have his likeness. I am the creator, he thinks suddenly, picking up the lonely doll and letting his fingers run through its short black hair.

He remembers the day he made this doll. Hankyung, he calls it, after the boy whose hair sits atop the doll's head.

"You look so lonely," he whispers to the doll. "Just like the day I met you. You were so happy that I came to talk to you, weren't you, Hannie?" Sometimes Heechul can still see Hankyung's smile when he closes his eyes.

Sometimes he regrets that Hankyung's gone, that Kibum's gone, that Donghae's gone. But he's made their dolls all in their likeness, and the dolls keep him company, anyway. Dolls don't change.

"Let's get you a partner, yeah Hankyung? Someone to sit next to you on this shelf." He places the doll back in its place and goes to the kitchen to take out scissors, thinking of the boy that lay next to him that night: Shiwon.

The house shakes as the train rumbles by.

Sometimes, when the house shakes like that, Heechul thinks that Hankyung and Kibum and Donghae and all the others are trying to claw their way out from behind his basement door. He thinks of his dolls--the bodies upon which his house is built.
