You walked over to him, fingers tangling and untangling themselves out of nervousness and your lunch juggling inside your stomach with butterflies as you approached the brunet who’s currently preoccupied in fixing the contents of his locker. “Uh, Jinki-sshi.” You called out, and right after the moment you did, you wanted to pull open a locker door and just fit yourself inside because he looked at you with those crescent eyes that might have caught you staring a few times before.
“Oh, hi!” he greeted you enthusiastically and waved his hand which collided rather harshly against the metal that made him wince for about a second. “What’s up?” he coolly covered up his endearing clumsiness by leaning up the locker on his shoulder.
“I just wanted to ask, when and where will we work on our English project?” you tilted your head a bit in inquiry, and resisted the urge to grab the pen that’s conveniently inside your skirt pocket and stab your heart with it to make it stop beating so ridiculously fast.
“We could work on it tomorrow if you’d like. Anywhere would be fine for me.” He nodded his head with a smile on his face. “Maybe at a café near your house, or maybe your house, but I’m not suggesting that you invite me to your house even though it seems like it, but if you do invite to your house, it’s fine with me and I’m not saying that it’s better if you invite me to your house, my preferences between a café and your house is equal, and-” He stopped midway and exhaled with disappointment towards his own words. “I’m confusing you and weirding you out at the same time, aren’t I?” he scratched the back of his lowered head as his eyes apologetically looked at you.
You nodded your head as you bit your lower lip and tried your hardest to prevent yourself from giggling at his adorable behavior. You find that your locked stare with him have to gone too long, and decided to break away from the awkward eye contact and gaze at his necktie instead which was knotted rather messily. You mentally told your hands to stay put and avoid fixing it up for him like a housewife would do to her husband.
A few seconds of silence filled the space between you two, and the empty hallway was filled with the sound of a ticking clock as the afternoon glow penetrated through a window.
You balanced your weight from your right foot, to your left, to your right, repeat, and unnecessarily ran your hand through your hair a little too often. You cleared your throat with intentions of saying that the both of you should do the project on the café instead since it would be embarrassing if he saw that your laptop’s wallpaper is actually his gorgeous face because you’re kind of obsessed like that. You reminded yourself that you won’t tell him about the wallpaper thing though.
“When it gets awkward, say ‘la’.” Jinki beat you to speaking as he declared his odd sentence loudly, randomly with serious expression on his face.
“You’re weird.” You didn’t try to stop the chuckles that broke free as your hand hovers in front of your mouth.
His melodious laughter joined in and his eyes twinkled with joy. His laugh was loud enough to flood the hallway and overlap yours, not that you minded. It was the most pleasing thing you’ve heard for this day, and it will surely be playing on repeat until you sleep, bringing a smile to your face whenever it would play inside your head.
“I like you.” The words slipped out without your permission and your hand made its way back to covering your mouth for about a few seconds then dropped it to your side once again, so as to help in not making it more obvious that you just told your deepest secret. You gave him a grin, crossing and uncrossing your fingers behind your back, hoping and dreading that he actually heard the confession that slipped out of your lips. A thought that you might actually be slightly bipolar because of your behavior crossed your mind.
He blinked for a moment while looking at you. “What?” he asked with surprised eyes, he took a step closer to you and leaned forward to check if what he heard was right.
“Nothing, I didn’t say anything at all, I didn’t even talk a while ago, I wasn’t talking about anything-” Your rushed babble halted to a stop right after you realized that Jinki just planted a kiss on your cheek.
He gave you another heartwarming grin and held your hand. “Actually, I think I liked you first.” He muttered with a lowered head and eyes that gazed directly at you.
“What?” You were the one to ask this time because there’s this slight possibility that your delusional mind might be messing around.
“Nothing, I didn’t say anything at all, I didn’t even talk a while ago.” He shook his head with a smile plastered to his face as he repeated what you said a few moments ago.
You giggled, and you could’ve sworn how hot your cheeks felt and maybe your whole face was freaking red right now but you don’t care at all because you have concluded that you’re the happiest girl on the planet at the moment. You heard it clearly, you definitely did.
He pulled the hand he had been holding, making you trudge closer, and wrapped his arms around you. You’re having second thoughts whether this is some kind of bizarre dream, but you smelled the scent of vanilla on him and it smelled wonderful, and you’re definitely sure that your nose doesn’t function in your dreams. “I like you too, a lot.” He whispered and pulled away with a grin and a tint of pink on his cheeks. “I’ll meet you at the café tomorrow.” He walked away and waved goodbye.
You nodded your head and wore a stupid love-struck smile on your face. It took a while before you waved back because your brain was too busy malfunctioning with too much delight.
He called out your name, turned around, and walked backwards to face you. “You already have my number right? Though it’s alright if you don’t have it, I already have yours anyway and I just haven’t texted you yet because I was such a-” his unstoppable ramble was halted as his back slammed against a wall. His eyes displayed surprise as he scanned the wall as if it deserved some scolding for being in his way. He looked back at you and smiled cheekily. “I should go now.” He chuckled, slightly embarrassed and walked to the building’s exit.
“Bye!” You said loudly, and waved at him with much courage than before as you felt like drifting away to heaven.
He waved back, eyes morphed into thinner crescents and showing his teeth that sparkled white with a grin that never failed to make the wings of the butterflies flutter inside of your stomach.
With much giddiness, you added “See you tomorrow!” You found yourself grinning like an idiot all by yourself in the empty hallway after he left. You took steps slowly as your legs felt like wobbly jelly while your heart did cartwheels on loop. You pinched yourself, and let out a squeal, because no, it wasn’t a dream.
