Jack doesn’t see Alex for a while after their second meeting, and he finds himself wondering why he’s even thinking about the fact he hasn’t seen the other boy. He sees the same people day in day out, and he never spares them a thought, but this Alex, Alex Gaskarth, he seems be clinging on with all he’s got to just be a thought in the back of his mind, prominent enough that when Jack sees a mop of blond hair, he thinks of the boy, or when he hears an infectious laugh, he looks around himself to see the source, when usually he’d just ignore it all.
It’s both irritating and intriguing, no ones even occupied more than a fleeting thought in Jack’s mind, and the fact that Alex seems to have wiggled his way in with only two meetings, it makes Jack want to kind of figure out why.
It’s a quiet Tuesday afternoon at work, when Jack’s scrunching his nose up at the karma sutra books he’s been told to stack onto the shelves. He’s not sure why the library even stocks karma sutra books, but here he is, slotting them onto the shelf.
He hears muttering from the aisle over, whispered curse words, someone obviously having trouble finding the book they need. Jack considers offering assistance, but then, even thought he knows it’s the polite thing to do, he doesn’t really want to get involved with actually helping someone, and so he ignores the pang in his chest that tells him he should really help, ignores the disappointment that just barely tapers into his thoughts, because his mother would want him to help, she’s brought him up to help others.
He carries on with the task at hand, listening to the thud as the confused teenager shoves the book back on the shelf, he ends up shoving it a little too hard, sending a book flying off the shelf on Jack’s side, it falls, smacking Jack on the arm where he’s knelt, reaching to push a book onto the shelf.
He yelps, just barely audible, and then it’s silent, before a soft, “did that just hit someone?” echoes through. He sighs, glances towards the entryway to the aisle and picking up the book that fell. He sees a boy appear, dark hair spiked upwards and a lip ring tugged between his teeth.
“I’m so sorry,” he apologises, moving forwards to grab the book and place it back on the shelf, in the wrong place, Jack notes. “I didn’t mean for that to happen, I couldn’t find a book and. Yeah. No excuses really, sorry, bro.” He looks sincere with his apology, and Jack just nods, trying not to stare at the book incorrectly placed back.
“It’s fine,” he answers, voice tight. He guesses karma kicked his ass for that one, since he didn’t help the guy, at least it’s the thought he allows himself to entertain, since he doesn’t believe in anything like that. The guy doesn’t leave though, like Jack expected -and hoped- but instead he just nods at Jack, still looking apologetic.
He seems to snap out of it though, sensing Jack’s discomfort and offering a friendly smile. “I’m Matt by the way, and still sorry about the book.” He laughs softly, and Jack doesn’t see the funny side, then again, he never really does.
Jack nods, darts his eyes away and gives into the urge to place the book back in it’s correct place. “I was actually wondering if you could help me, if it’s not too much to ask?” Matt questions, shifting on the spot. Just then, his phone rings, and he sighs, apologising again before tugging the device from his pocket and putting it to his ear.
“What’s up, Alex?” he asks, and Jack looks in his direction, eyes trained over his shoulder to avoid eye contact as that name pulls a face into his mind. He wonders idly if it’s the same Alex, before declaring that a stupid thought, Alex is a common name, there’s no way the Alex this Matt is talking to is the Alex Jack has met, and if it were, Jack tells himself, he wouldn’t really care anyway.
However, it turns out it is the very same Alex, and if it were anyone else, they’d be screaming fate at the top of their lungs because this is the third time they’ve had a chance meeting. Jack hears Matt say which aisle he’s in, and then he’s exiting the call, giving Jack a smile and looking out towards the main part of the library.
Jack turns back to pushing the few remaining books onto the shelf, when he hears another voice, and his stomach seems to somersault when he hears the amused, “you know, if you want some tips on sex, I’m more than happy to give you some.” And he looks up, sees Alex looking at Matt, smirk on his face as the other boy scoffs.
“I don’t need tips on how to fuck my own hand, since that’s the only thing you’ve got experience with,” he quips, and just as Alex goes to retort, he catches sight of the librarian, crouched down, trying to avoid being seen.
“Jack, hey,” he says, smiling and stepping past Matt. His friend gives him an odd look, before rolling his eyes.
“H-hey,” he replies, frowning as the word catches in his throat. His gaze drifts to Alex’s legs, not wanting to make eye contact since he finds it quite intimidating. It’s useless really, because Alex just drops down to rest his ass on his heels so he’s level with the other boy.
“How are you?” he asks, and Jack’s head tilts just slightly, eyes dropping so he’s looking at the boy’s throat.
“Fine, thanks,” he says, adding as an afterthought, “you?” Alex smiles even more at that, nods, unaware that his friend has left them on their own with an exaggerated sigh and a rather flamboyant flair to his movements.
“I’m great!” He stands up as Jack does, moving so he’s behind the book cart, so Alex isn’t so close. “Would you want to hang out at some point, Jack?” Alex asks, and he sounds nervous, and when Jack risks a look up, Alex is glancing down to his shoes. There’s something about the way Alex uses his name, such a simple thing really, but it seems to just, draw him in, somehow, makes him want to see what other things Alex might say to him.
And it’s with that thought, that Jack nods, maybe he could use a friend, at least it would make his mother happy. Alex glances up just in time to catch it, and the megawatt smile he gives Jack in return makes his fingertips prickle and a half smile to tug at the corner of his lips.

A/n I'm sorry! Stupidly long delay, partly because part of me was like 'this is such a shit fic' but then I decided I'd just give it a chance and see what I can do with it. Idk, I just have this really awesome scene in my head for it, and I think I'm just really impatient to get to it, so it's just making it harder. Who knows. Thanks for reading.
