Oh, Bethesda

Jul 29, 2007 23:22

I'm updating from the exorbitant comfort of my very own air mattress in my very own apartment in Bethesda, MD. Yep, today was my first full day as an "adult." And the most appropriate phrase I can muster as a descriptor for this momentous occasion is "profoundly uneventful."

I arrived here yesterday evening around 6:00 or so. Of course, roommate Jon had already moved up here about a week ago, so he was around and was kind enough to help me move things in. Unfortunately, since my car remains in the shop (thanks, Shui Zhang. thanks a bunch), so I had to drive up in the truck. My furniture won't arrive for another two weeks or so...ergo the air mattress.

A couple of Jon's friends showed up around 7:00 for an overnight visit. Very nice people--both of them teachers as well. They were going with Jon to a few bars, etc. in Bethesda and Georgetown and invited me to go along. I turned them down, mostly because I was exhausted from the move-in, but also because I'm on a very tight budget until paychecks start in late August. Otherwise I would have gone--it would have been a good opportunity to learn a little more about the city I'm now living in.

This morning we went out to McDonald's for a quick breakfast. Remembering my "budget" excuse from the night before, one of Jon's friends actually bought me my Fruit and Yogurt parfait and small orange juice. Slightly embarrassing but most considerate nonetheless.

Jon and I talked a few times over the course of today. No extended conversations or anything, but it's clear that our roommate relationship will be entirely amicable.

Other than that, today was quite boring. I drove out to the school where my teaching methodologies class will be meeting. An easy drive on Sunday afternoon, but it will be nightmarish come tomorrow morning at 7:45 AM. I went to the apartment complex's gym (very nice, by the way!) and spent a half hour on a stationary bike while reading a book on teaching that Jon gave me. And I made a potently fragrant but villainously simple curried rice for dinner (1 cup rice...cooked with 1 cube chicken boullion, 1 tbsp cumin, 1 tbsp chili powder, 1 tbsp curry powder, some black pepper, a few dashes of turmeric, and a few sauteed minced cloves of garlic). Leftovers are in the fridge....
