Dread Pez: "Live" and Fucked Up from Mischief Reef, The Philippines
'. I knew immediately who it was (how could i not?): the enigmatic global-trotting 'DJ' and notoriously inept gun-for-hire, Dread Pez.'> The last time we had spoken was at Heathrow Airport, where we exchanged a tearful but hasty good-bye as s/he (i've never seen D.P. unmasked) boarded a red-eye bound for parts unknown, pursued by a cabal of Russian Mafia who wanted the collection of priceless King Tubby dubplates ze'd pilfered from one of their front operations in Volgograd. We hadn't spoken for months. Seems Dready (as ze's known among 'friends') had ended up in Manila, where ze was enjoying the burgeoning free party and squatting scene. I guess ze'd shaken the Russians, but, in doing so, had become quite a fan of a local methamphetamine variant called shabu. Ze'd pawned the dubplates and was now in debt to a small-time slum dealer who was threatening to either a.) rat zir out to the Russians (they're everywhere, apparently) or b.) amputate zir hands. "I fear (c): all of the above," ze whispered, zir voice obscured by the ever present balaclava and the distance of continents. I didn't bother to ask where ze'd gotten the satellite phone; D.P. is nothing if not resourceful.
Without being too crass, i tried to inform zir that there's not a whole lot i could do to help out: i was broke and, even if i wasn't, how the fuck would i get money to Manila so ze could buy cheap speed?. "But there is a way! Like last time! I've got a mix made, see, and you could post it in the members-section of your blog. I could take a cut..." I tried to explain that i don't have a member's section, but ze was oblivious. I further tried to explain that ze actually wasn't much of a DJ, that, in point of fact, zir skills were essentially non-existent. The response was incomprehensible but even above the space of oceans and the din of Manila, i knew it was angry. Ze was rambling, clearly having scored recently and then ze called in The Favor, something i can't go into detail about here. Suffice to say, it involves a truckload of stolen custom fetish wear and the ruined career of an RCMP officer in rural British Columbia. I sighed and acquiesced, but by that point, ze was gone. Ze knew i would have to. D.P. is nothing if not crafty.
So here it is, transferred from some no-account internet cafe on the outskirts of Manila. I've listened to it a few times and it's okay. The music choices are nice, but D.P. really can't mix. Not at all. Technically, it's the usual absurdly sloppy, clueless collision of breakcore, dubstep, mash-ups, gabber, ragga, random samples and stoner metal. But what can i say? I owed zir a favor. So here's the latest from D.P., who, hopefully, will be twitching and scratching at zir arms in some unfurnished shooting gallery on some Philippine island by the time you read this. I wish zir luck but, please, please, stop calling yourself a DJ. It's getting embarrassing for both of us
