Blog Topic:
So, I "don't need help".
**********
I went to the Financial Aid office at WasteCahn today to inquire about my Work Study situation. I asked why I was not granted Work Study, despite the fact that I've had it for just about every semester I have gone to WCSU.
I figured that since I moved out of my parents' place this past Spring and I wrote them an official declaration, that I wasn't going to have any issues with getting at least some Work Study funds.
WELL, the verdict was clear, she said to me, "you don't need help. Your parents make too much money for you to get Work Study."
I am sorry, but this is totally ridiculous.
Despite what some may think or say, my parents have supported my college tenure very little. I have supported myself at least 90% of the way and very likely 95% or more. Nearly $40,000 of loan debt, working full-time continuously since Summer 2006, including 50-60 hours per week during final exams, etc, and I am barely pulling through. This is not how a college student should have to live. (it's not as bad as it sounds, but the fact that I am barely making ends meet despite all my efforts, is somewhat worrisome)
This fall is going to be a challenge. Since I won't be getting a lot of hours at the store (perhaps that will change once November gets here) and now I will not be getting a raise at the Weather Center, I'm basically going to break even every month, assuming that nothing major comes up.
It's quite upsetting that despite the fact that I now live on my own and my parents continue to help very little, if at all, I am not getting help from school.
Perhaps I forgot the factor in that I live off-campus now, and the State University system probably frowns upon helping out commuter students as much as if they were on-campus students.
In the words of the greatly missed Jennifer Romano, whatev.
