I think I missed the boat on this films-wot-define-you meme thing, but I'm having a go at listing a bunch anyway. Because I exist! And am intrigued to see what they become. OK, here goes...
  1. Legally Blonde (not 2) - this is the greatest fable about self-identity and knowledge institutions ever made for the cinema and if you can see how that works ( Read more... )

recs, memes

Lovely choices. I also think that Rachel Weisz is a goddess. (You might want to watch her in Agora, if you already didn't) I also love The Mummy movies with her. So fun!

Thanks - and oh yes, I've always meant to see Agora! I fear collecting all these makes me want to go on a movie binge now, but I don't know where to start...

And I've just remembered that I owe you a comment for your lovely words about my fic!!! Must go and give you that properly. :D

What you said about LOTR right back at you with Moulin Rouge.

St. Trinians was very enjoyable. Mostly for Paloma Faith.

At least Moulin Rouge is done in two hours! I'm not sure it defines me really, though; it took me a very long time to think of it, but I have seen it a lot of times. I don't know what it says that quite a lot of these films came out in 2001. The last moment of glory before the descent into post-9/11 superheroes?

You know, I didn't even realise Paloma Faith was Paloma Faith in that film... She is excellent.

ETA: I just got it up on the stream... I'd forgotten about Mr Darcy the dog!!!!!!! Classic.

LOTR is perfect for filling up boring Christmas Days with the parents though.

You have certainly covered a few genres.

There's something about Paloma Faith. I'm not keen on her music, but I always enjoy her.

You say filling up, I say prolonging the agony... Although I think my cousins, me and my brother ended up watching Disney's Rapunzel last time, so maybe LotR would be better.

Genres, genres everywhere!

I think I'm the same with old Paloma; she's always entertaining on talk shows etc, but I can't be bothered with the music at all.

Ooh, how could I have forgotten Legally Blonde and About a Boy? Consider them my amended #11 and 12.

I'm trying to read some thrillers (because I got the crazy idea to write one myself), so do you recommend The Constant Gardner, especially as you loved the film?

And yes on Rachel Weisz being flawless.

I suppose what I like here, as in The Constant Gardener is how much the film seems to flag up the fact that we are seeing Satine completely from Christian's point of view and are in fact living in an opium-laced fantasy.

I have never thought of it this way, possibly because I always take a Doylist pov when thinking about this movie - we're seeing Satine that way because of Baz Luhrmann, not because of Christian, but you are totally right about it being an extremely fantasized view of her. And I bet that fic is out there, somewhere.'

I love A Knight's Tale, though I shipped Will with the blacksmith. The love interest was nothing more than a love interest, so she bored me.

I've never seen anything like it - before or since! And I can't get over how much it only works because of everything that's made us used to watching high schoolers as proxies for adults in a carefully stratified society. ... Maybe I do want to watch it again.

I liked that you added what you like about the films/what connects for you.

Thanks! There's only so much self-definition I'm willing to let these things have control of. :D
