Obscure Gems (Yuletide Recs)

Herewith are three sets of recs. The first are stories that can stand entirely on their own, no canon knowledge required. The second set can probably stand on their own, but might be better if you have at least some vague and passing acquaintance with canon. The third is just a few light-hearted pieces, for any of which you can figure out as much ( Read more... )

Hello, great post - but you need to remove the forward-slash from the end of your urls to make the links work. (And also in your post to the yuletide comm.)

Thanks. This is what comes of copy-pasting in a hurry without checking what you're doing.

Thank you for reccing "Bow Out," the story that was written for me! It hasn't gotten nearly enough love.

I don't think the commenting follows the quality of the stories reliably. Bow Out was such a good story, both unexpected and true to the spirit of the series, I couldn't believe it had so few comments. I guess not that many people have seen House of Cards, which is their loss. Maybe what we really need are some pimping posts for the less well known fandoms: something like a shorter version of the the overviews on crack_van.

Also, with so many stories this year, I think people have tended to skip over the ones that start out slowly and build up, which is also their loss, given that some of the best stories I've found so far have had slow or understated openings.

Actually, ave_eva is working on a project to collect pimping posts/overviews for tiny fandoms-- it's over at fandom_of_one. :D

As a reader who's unfamiliar with the vast majority of the fandoms included in Yuletide, and who's been a bit intimidated by the sheer size of the archive, I wanted to thank you for this set of recs. It's wonderful to have a guide directing me to stories for which I don't need extensive knowledge of the canon.

In (inadequate) return, and in the hope that it helps, the great big pimping post I did for Meine Liebe almost a year ago contains what were then live links to the episodes, in .avi format. I haven't found much of a fandom, but I keep hoping one will grow; if these links are dead, I feel peculiarly sure that someone would be willing to re-upload for you.

I'm hoping that a few other people will do posts like this. There must a fair number of stories I could enjoy I haven't found just because I know nothing about the fandom. There are, as you say, so many stories, and it isn't really practical to browse around where you start with no knowledge, because often you can't tell if you'll be able to understand the story until you've finished it. If people reccing in their own fandoms said whether the story could be read more generally, it would be a big help.
