Sandaime was a sentimental fool, most of them thought. Orochimaru may have been a Sannin, but he never really cared for Konaha's people. Sandaime clung to the hope that maybe, maybe Orochimaru would finally change. If given something to love, maybe he would learn.
"As Yondaime, I name Orochimaru," Sandaime declared in front of the village.
Orochimaru was brilliant, but he was a lousy Hokage. He didn't understand what sacrifices the job required. When Kyuubi came later that year, Orochimaru did manage to defeat the kitsune, but by the time he did, there was no village left to protect.
