Summary: Kurt talks, Burt listens.

Kurt has never been the good at being quiet.

Burt loves his son, but he's aware that Kurt's greatest strength is also his greatest weakness. Somewhere along the way, Kurt has learned that he has to scream to be heard, but he hasn't learned that when he screams, he can't hear anyone else.

Sometimes Kurt's self-centered nature crosses the line, and Burt has to bite his tongue to keep from interjecting. When Kurt blithely dismisses someone as “beneath him,” Burt has to fight to keep from lecturing his son. Kurt's drive to get out of Lima is all-consuming, and Burt doesn't point out how lucky Kurt is to see an exit at all.

Burt has learned the value of silence. It is listening that he learns to accept his gay son before Kurt finds the courage to tell him. He keeps his quiet as his son struggles in a town that he clearly doesn't belong in, only speaking up when Kurt's safety is at risk. Helicopter parenting is not Burt's style, and it would only result in resentment from his stubborn son. Kurt has to be allowed to make his own mistakes.

Most of the time, the only thing Burt can do is pay attention to his son, and hold his advice until he is asked for his opinion. There doesn't always have to be a snappy comeback on his tongue, because speaking carelessly often causes more damage than remaining still. Burt doesn't pretend to be a smart man, but he has learned that sometimes listening is the best he can do.

Someday, he hopes, Kurt will learn the same.
