Author’s Notes: I was looking through my old notebooks when I suddenly had the urge to write this. I just saw this in mind in complete color that I didn’t dare ignore it. It contains very little dialogue and I hope that’s alright with all of you. Also, I’m setting this years and years in the future. Just because. ^^
Disclaimers: None of the Dong Bang Shin Ki boys are mine, only the plot is.
---------------------------------------------------------
Check-in. Check-out.
The five of you stand in the airport-five pieces of baggage, all belonging to one person. There are no fans, no media men-SM has made sure of that. YunHo hovers around the bags, checking if they are all in order. JunSu is prying YooChun’s fingers from that bag pack of sweets he’s given as a farewell gift.
And you can’t help but laugh a little.
ChangMin looks at you, eyes widening a little but then brushes it off as something you’d do. He helps JunSu by secretly promising YooChun that he will give him one bag later. JunSu pretends he doesn’t hear it. YunHo stops hovering over everything and stands in front of the tallest.
This is it, he tells ChangMin.
This is it, ChangMin says.
It seems so final, you think. In the back of your mind, you’ve never imagined it to by like this. You’ve always dreamt that the five of you will retire together, maybe when you’re all in your forties. You’ll buy a house somewhere near the beach and everyone will still try to teach you how to swim. They will fail and you will all end up playing by the shorelines. YunHo would-could, might-drag DongHae and HeeChul in your little abode. JunSu would insist that HyukJae be there and you will be five plus three. Eight men in one house-and they lived happily ever after. The end.
But now, you’ll all be going your separate ways.
ChangMin kisses his parents goodbye and reminds his sisters to always visit them; he hugs KyuHyun and KiBum. He gives leader-sshi a light squeeze; a tighter one for JunSu. He wipes the tears flowing from YooChun’s eyes and slips the small bag of sweets in his pocket.
Your little happily-ever-after is fading into nothing right before your eyes.
He stops in front of you and gives that smug kind of smile he’s now known for. It reminds you that this he is no longer the ChangMin you first met years back-no longer the band’s magnae, no longer TVXQ’s Choikang ChangMin. He’s grown up now-grown up to be more than any of you have ever imagined-and he’s flying out of Korea to fulfill his other dreams.
Sure you didn’t forget anything, you ask.
He smiles again and puts his arms around you, enveloping you in the same hug you remember getting when HUG won its first award. He’s not crying now and you’re not comforting him. Perhaps, you think, your roles are even reversed-NAH.
ChangMin drops his voice to a whisper.
He doesn’t answer your question-he never really does-and then lets you go (you try not to hold onto the edges of his jacket and prevent him from flying, from going, from leaving you) all too soon. He waves at everyone, promises that he’ll call every one of you when he arrives in Canada. He doesn’t look back, doesn’t spare you a peek.
You turn around and walk away from the crowd just as you hear his footsteps fade away.
I left Mr. Bear on top of your bed, JaeJoong hyung.
