So since I have no car and the places I could work are out of feasible walking distance, I’ve decided to go ahead and pimp myself out as a freelance editor so that I may win my bread. I’ve got a PayPal account now (Premium so I can sell things…wheeee), but I’m seriously stuck on pricing.
I checked out a few sites, and one said that for freelance editors a reasonable rate is $25 an hour. I’m not so sure about that; I would rather charge per page, since I’m probably mostly going to be doing college papers, which run in the two-to-eight page range, at least. I’ve been going back and forth with my mom about it and she suggested $1.50 or $2.00 per page. We also threw out there a nickel per word up to a certain point, after which the charge drops to 2 cents a word. It’s big and confusing and if I’m confused my target audience will be confused, and I really don’t want any of us to be confused since this is real money we’re dealing with here.
So, I’m opening up the floor: what would you pay for someone to edit your paper or novel, and what do you think is reasonable for a college kid working on her degree and with very little “professional” experience to charge?
