There are a lot of things I love about my college. The surrounding area and the strictly enforced quiet hours policy aren't any of them.

Last night after the senior party held in the Deerpath (dorm) 1st floor lounge on North Campus one of the coolest and most intelligent guys I know, Logan Dick, who will graduate tomorrow, decided to play his bagpipes for the rest of the students outside of Deerpath. Logan is, in my opinion (though I don't know a lot about bagpipes) a really good bagpipe player. Everyone on North heard him and a lot of people, myself included, came out of their dorm rooms or the party to listen. Everyone kept begging him to keep playing, and then he sort of led everyone down the path to middle campus, with people clapping in time to the music. It reminded me of the PHS drumline coming through the halls in high school at the end of last period. It made a lot of students smile and laugh and join in. Very pied piper stuff. Everyone was happy, nobody was causing any problems, and it made a great send-off for the seniors.

Unfortunately, just when we reached the south end of middle campus (it's about a 5 minute walk from where we started) one of the Campus security officers came up to everyone and told us to disperse, go back to our rooms, or we'd all get written up for breaking quiet hours. Quiet hours, btw, start at 2 am during weekends. Admittedly, this was last night, so it was thursday, and technically not a weekend. But nobody is on campus anymore! Classes are done, finals are over, and the seniors graduate tomorrow! It's all seniors and the kids who are staying for the summer. NOBODY IS STUDYING! There was some...discussion...with the officer, who then told us that he was making us stop because there was a Lake Forest cop sitting in his car outside the gates waiting for us to come through so he could slap us all with a town noise violation! AAARGH!!! This town is ridiculous. It really is. If you buy a house across the street from the college, you should expect to get college students (gasp!) acting like college students. The college isn't new. It was built before the town was, way back in 1865 or something like that. Get over yourselves and let the kids have a little fun!

Now, I'm ok with rules against destruction. I don't appreciate being woken up in the middle of the night either. But LFC is extremely tame. We get fire alarms and random vandalism, drunken idiots and such, but it's not something that should really bother the surrounding residents. We don't walk drunk through town or do anything that should really bother the townspeople. What we do is drive our clunker cars and take parking spaces from their BMWs and Mercedes. We sometimes are loud enough to be heard off-campus. Shocking. And we generally act like liberal arts college students. Which is really, in comparison to how we could act (and, according to what I've heard about years past, how LFC students used to act) is not that bad.

So my point is, let us have our bagpipes at 1:30 in the morning the week before graduation, please!
