Saturday ended the rather hellish experience that most people call Sorority Rush. First off, at Emory it's an extrememly bureucratic, week long even comprised of first starting with all the sororities and then having the potential pledges and sororities cut the ones they don't like. In the middle of all this, one round you to philanthropy events (I organized Ball Breakers, a benefit pool tournament) and other rounds you do skits and other stupid stuff to bond. Anyone left at the end of the week picks their top 2 choices and at most you can get bids from these. I, being lucky, got 2 bids from the 2 that I was interested in all along, Kappa Alpha Theta and Kappa Kappa Gamma. Saturday morning they delivered letters saying if you got in and then you do bullshit stuff like screaming about how much you love your sorority and how much better they are from the other practically indistinguishable ones. On the upside I got a tshirt, food, and taken to a strip club!
Even though I have about 2 weeks to decide which sorority or even to accept the bid, I am already starting to see signs of foul play afoot. First off, all bidees/pledges have a mandatory 11p.m. curfew. Why? I have no clue. To make sure that you are keeping to this, at anytime they can call you and command you to do things. Last night at about 4:30 am I had just got in bed and then I got a call from KKG telling me to meet them across campus at a phone booth wearing cute underwear. IS THIS REALLY NECESSARY????! I lika da sleep! Also, if you see any of the sisters around campus, they can require you to do stupid/embarrassing stuff. Luckily I don't have too much shame, so when Beka and I were walking to organic chemistry and had to do a performance of "Hey Miky" in the middle of the quad, it wasn't that bad.
I have a feeling that soon I'll tell KKG where exactly they can shove that pin because sororities are 1)expensive, 2) time consuming, 3) no housing because it's Georgia law that 5 or more females that aren't related living together constitutes a brothel. Finally, I got a lovely email from Fin on the subject with him comments on the thought of his sister being in KKG. His email merely had a picture of the UPENN chapter in an incredibly compromising position and "Welcome to the Whore Core: I always suspected it, but you just affirmed it."
