Reaction Papers

Oct 29, 2005 09:57

I just finished my second Reaction Paper due for my Business Class, they are basically news article reviews on business concepts. I'll have three total to do. Reaction Papers are neat easy little projects!

Here is the first Reaction Paper I did last month. I picked it because I thought it was funny that the Europeans were hurting for their bras and underwear! Tons of bras and underwear were stuck in ports while Europeans where yelling Bloody Hell:

Article Review: China calls on Europe to ease textile quotas
China and Europe’s discussion to limit Chinese manufactured clothing into Europe has yet to reach a solution. Earlier this year Europe restricted the amount of textiles allowed to be imported, giving European manufactures more opportunity to produce clothing and other textiles.

This article is a good example of the benefits and the disruptive effects of global trade. The European retailers have a large customer base for these imported clothes because of better prices, but the quota is set lower than the retailer’s need. Meanwhile the European manufactures have a difficult time competing with the Chinese imports, I believe because they have more laws and taxes to abide by that Chinese Manufactures. There is also a concern with the low quality often found with imported textiles.

I agree that a quota should be in place to allow European manufactures the same opportunity to produce and sell their textiles. Allowing more imported goods than those you export can lead to job loss and leave you dependant upon another country. A quota should be in place to balance the amount being imported and exported from country to country to allow equal growth.

Here is the recent one about a walking human billboard:

Article Review: Co. to Advertise on Neb. Man's Forehead
Andrew Fischer laughed all the way to the bank after selling his forehead as advertising space last January, of course he was advertising in line at the bank too. $37,375 bought SnoreStop a months worth of forehead advertising at the end of Andrew Fischer’s EBay auction for advertising space on his forehead.

This article is a good example of Guerrilla Marketing, an innovative marketing concept designed to get customers attention in unusual ways. Guerrilla Marketing is relatively new and is great for new companies that don’t have a lot of marketing dollars. As expressed in the article, "People will always comment on something out of the ordinary," Fischer said in his sales pitch. "People like weird."

In this modern world I feel bombarded with advertisements. I eventually become blinded to them on the billboard highways and the pop-ups on the internet. Guerrilla marketing is a great to get consumers attentions again, but if the forehead concept becomes common place, it too will become unremarkable and ineffective. I feel that companies would be better served if they used marketing research to narrow down their market segment and focus their dollars where their product is needed instead of random ads everywhere they can afford space. Quality not quantity.
