Actually, events in the story quickly suggest a replacement for the post of "cleverest man alive." However, I don't want to ruin the story for everybody by actually letting them read it, so I didn't make that a part of this post.
As far as the literalness of the gods, a major theme in classical literature is sort of the elusiveness of omens (I'm thinking of the guy who thought he was destined to invade Greece and ended up just spitting out a tooth), so that's where I take the idea. Strangely, of all the passages that I've written so far, this one has the least to do with the law, as it's completely my imagining and not based on a happening in American case law.
