There are certainly many rumours floating around about who the Head students may be.
I'm fairly sure that was Victor Elms I saw exiting Flourish and Blotts, though. I didn't get a close look, but it looked quite like him.
I doubt Edward would have murdered him in cold blood anyway-- there'd not be any guarantee that he'd get the position even if the supposed original candidate was deceased, is there? Moreover, it's entirely possible that he did get it after all without having to resort to such drastic measures.
