That wasn't too long ago. *g* And you can see his naivete in recent moments with Elena (I WILL NEVER LEAVE YOU AGAIN!!11!!) where he seems to totally believe that EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE TOTALLY GREAT FOREVER (and then deservedly gets pushed into the mud). That naivete is sort of there with Stefan here too - Damon really is determined that he WILL cure his brother of this debilitating mental illness by sheer force of will. Oh Damon, what are you.

Yeah, there's a motherload of problematic grossness surrounding the Damon/Sage story, but I just can't help but be mesmerised by the gender headfuckery going on in all those flashbacks.
I missed the diaries! I missed them! But not as much as I missed the crow.

So I've been thinking about this and I'm beginning to think that it's not naivety but earnestness and I just couldn't find the word. IDK, for me, flashback!Damon hasn't yet be disillusioned properly or at least he hasn't embraced his disillusionment yet? I don't know. He is just more 'innocent' to me than present!Damon.
I have no idea what I am trying to say, because I agree that Damon in 1912 is bitter, withdrawn (massively), foolish, defiant etc and he remains those things today but his actions in the present have a...'lol nothing matters' about it-- which is manufactured (Damon (and the writers) has set himself up to be the antithesis of Stefan whether or not that is actually true) because you are right, we do see glimpses of earnest/naive!Damon even now ("Because I love you."/"That's the problem.") and I guess because I get so much entertainment from those glimpses I just want more, because I am greedy and c'mon. Those moments are perfection.
